Supercars has avoided a parity stand-off at the Bathurst 1000, with Ford’s efforts to lobby for last-minute aerodynamic changes collapsing in the face of staunch opposition from the Chevrolet teams.

“Unfortunately, the proposed aerodynamic changes to the Ford Mustang, which have been acknowledged by all parties involved to reduce the delta between the two models, will not be implemented for the Bathurst 1000 this weekend. It will likely put the debate to bed for at least the weekend, but what’s behind the issue that’s got the Supercars paddock so tense ahead of its biggest round of the year?“The Supercar category is a technical parity category,” the sport’s operations manual says.

The GM is a single-camshaft 16-valve 5.7-litre motor. Ford has designed a four-camshaft, 32-valve 5.4-litre engine.You can simulate engine performance on a dynamometer, and equalisation has been more or less achieved, albeit with some tinkering around how long each motor takes to shift gears to try to equalise acceleration.

But the Blue Oval has never given the impression it was fully satisfied with where the process ended up, and throughout the year the Ford teams have regularly criticised the state of parity in the sport.Up to this point last year the Mustang was qualifying on average 0.126 seconds ahead of the Commodore, as it was then. The best-place Mustang was qualifying 1.32 on average, ahead of the Commodore at 2.4.The Camaro is on average 0.26 seconds ahead. It’s qualifying in position 1.

Supercars opened an inquest into the apparent disparity and ended up making some downforce-boosting changes to the Mustang’s bodywork for Townsville. The operations manual empowers the sport to make in-season parity-related changes in some specific areas, including total aerodynamic downforce, aerodynamic downforce balance, aerodynamic drag, centre of gravity, engine power and fuels consumption.
