Two experienced hikers were rescued from Mount Washington in New Hampshire after becoming stranded due to severe weather conditions including waist-deep snow and whiteout. Though prepared with warm clothing and gear, the hikers found themselves in danger as the weather rapidly deteriorated.

Two experienced hikers were rescued after an hourslong ordeal in which they became stranded in waist-deep snow and whiteout conditions on New Hampshire ’s challenging Mount Washington . The hikers, who were identified as Kathyrn McKee and Beata LeLacheur, had attempted to summit the mountain a month ago. They returned and did it again Sunday after trekking through neighboring peaks in the White Mountains.

Both veteran hikers, the women were an hour behind schedule on their descent and losing daylight, but they had warm clothing, headlamps and other gear. Then the wind kicked in. The temperature dropped. They were in waist-deep snow and whiteout conditions. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department responded to a call for help and dispatched a snow cat to the rescue. The hikers were eventually located and safely escorted off the mountain via the cog railway.
