President Donald Trump reversed a 2015 name change by former President Barack Obama, renaming Mount Denali back to Mount McKinley. This restoration honors the 25th U.S. president, William McKinley, a native of Canton, Ohio.

Why did we name an Alaskan mountain after Ohio’s President William McKinley? The Wake Up for Monday, Feb. 3, 2025President Donald Trump has renamed Mount Denali as Mount McKinley, reversing a 2015 name change made by former President Barack Obama in response to requests from native Alaskans. Obviously historical events happened in the past, and unless you live in a movie with access to a time machine, you can’t go back to change them.

If you’re like me, what you remember about the Canton native from Ohio history class is his predilection for red carnations and his eventual assassination by an anarchist. He never set foot in Alaska.
