The Port of San Diego said it's working to repair the popular boat launch's westside floating dock, which has been closed since mid-June

Residents and tourists should brace for long lines this holiday weekend at the popular Shelter Island Boat Launching Ramp in San Diego Bay.

The facility, which services an estimated 50,000 launches a year, recently suffered “structural damage,” the Port of San Diego announced Thursday. The boat launch’s westside floating dock has been closed for maintenance since June 16, according to the agency, which declined to provide further details, including possible causes and how soon it could reopen.“Port engineering staff and consultants are working quickly to assess the cause and extent of the damage, determine what repairs are needed and to schedule repairs,” said Port spokesperson Brianne Page in an email.

While the eastside docks will be open, the agency urged patience as backups are likely during peak hours. There are three other free boat launching ramps on the bay, including at Pepper Park in National City, Marina Park in Chula Vista and Glorietta Bay in Coronado. More information is available at
