SEMMES, Ala. - Newly released body camera video is shedding light on a controversial officer-involved shooting that left a Semmes business owner seriously injured earlier this year. The video, obtained exclusively by NBC 15, shows the moments leading up to the January 4th shooting at Bowman Auto Air, where police say officers were responding to a possible burglary around 3 a.

m. According to Semmes Police, officers arrived to find a door open and a cut padlock on the ground. The department says officers had also responded to a reported break-in at the business just hours earlier. Body camera footage from Officer Brandon Murphy shows officers entering the building, moving room to room, and repeatedly announcing themselves as police while searching for potential intruders. Inside the business, officers encounter a camper. Police say the owner, Johnny Bowman Jr., was inside.Police say Bowman fired first. Officers retreated from the building, returning fire as they exited. Officer Murphy was grazed in the back and has since recovered. Bowman was hit multiple times and underwent surgery. He survived and has not been charged with a crime. No charges were ever filed against the officers involved. A Mobile County grand jury later reviewed the case and found no criminal wrongdoing. Chief Friend told NBC 15 officers were legally allowed to enter the business under what are known as "exigent" circumstances, citing the open door and damaged lock as signs of a possible burglary. He also addressed criticism over the department’s response after the shooting, including claims that officers delayed medical care. Friend says officers could not safely re-enter the building after shots were fired and instead called for additional resources, including a SWAT team. Police say Bowman eventually exited the building and was then taken to an ambulance. In the months following the shooting, Friend says the department faced backlash from across the country. “We’ve got numerous calls and emails my officers were threatened everybody’s been threatened and cussed out, harassed,” Friend said.“They got one side of the story which was the wrong side of the story,” he said. Friend says the decision to release the body camera footage now is part of an effort to be transparent with the public.Shots spark housefire blaze as Mobile crews rush to save newborn born in parking lot A chaotic series of events unfolded in Mobile on Plover Street early Sunday morning, beginning with reports of gunfire and ending with firefighters helping saveWilliam “BJ” Squires pleaded guilty Monday in Mobile County Circuit Court to second-degree rape in a case that had been set for trial, according to a court ordeAccording to ALEA, a single-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 5:27 p.m. Saturday, March 21, has claimed two lives.
