This Earth Day, the constant drumbeat of terrifying climate news might cast a pall on our observance of the day. However, there are many reasons to celebrate the progress that has been made recently and in the near future. The news cycle tends to focus on the latest climate disasters, — the tornadoes, the fires, the floods. Journalists and the public appear to be less focused on the excellent climate solutions that we already have at hand and their growth.
Solar Photovoltaics : In 2004, it took a year to install one Gigawatt of new solar PV. Last year, it became possible to install one GW of PV in a day. The cost of modules was $106 per watt in 1975, and fell to 13 cents per watt by the end of 2023.
