Even though North Carolina presumably will be without freshman forward Caleb Wilson for tomorrow's clash between Virginia Tech and UNC, the Tar Heels still present a daunting task for the Hokies, who continue to sit near the NCAA Tournament cutline.
Wilson averaged 19.8 points per game and has not played since Feb. 10, where he sustained a wrist injury."Sometimes when a guy goes down, other guys elevate," said Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young on this week's edition of the Tech Talk Live show. "We’ve seen that ourselves. They’ve gotten better guard play without Wilson. They’ve had guys step up. We’ve got our hands full. "We’re looking forward to getting down there. We’ve had a couple of really good days of practice. Our team is excited. We’ve got a lot on the line." With three games left on its slate, Virginia Tech has an enormous clash awaiting it tomorrow night in Chapel Hill. Even down Wilson, North Carolina has regrouped and reloaded, with extra contributions from Seth Trimble and Henri Veesaar. Moreover, they're playing at a faster pace, something that will presumably force Virginia Tech to convert at a high shooting clip to have any chance of claiming Saturday's showdown. "They’re playing faster without ," Young said. "They really come at you in transition. If they’re scoring in transition, you’re putting your back against the wall. You have to play good offense. You can’t turn it over. "You can’t take bad shots. Then you’ve got to sprint back and get your defense set and be ready to guard quick ball screens and the other actions they’re going to throw at you. We’ve got a good plan in place." The Hokies enter this contest one game below .500 in league play. Though they've acquitted themselves well throughout ACC play, they've also struggled to close out games, losing four ACC games — Wake Forest, Stanford, SMU and Miami — by a single possession. Virginia Tech has won two games over then-ranked foes, toppling then-No. 21 Virginia on Dec. 31 and then-No. 20 Clemson on Feb. 11. The Tigers have since dropped out of the AP Top 25 and are currently on a three-game losing streak. Virginia, meanwhile, is in the midst of a nine-game win streak and has won 14 of its last 15 with the lone defeat, ironically enough, coming to then-No. 22 North Carolina on Jan. 24.
