Ethereum developers are gearing up for the launch of Pectra, the network's first upgrade in 11 months, which is expected to go live on the mainnet in early April. This upgrade brings significant improvements, particularly for wallets and validators, aiming to address some of the network's long-standing challenges and enhance its user experience.

Ethereum developers have officially set test dates for Pectra , the network's first upgrade in 11 months, potentially paving the way for an April release. Pectra , a combination of the upgrades Prague and Electra, will introduce several key improvements, particularly focusing on wallets and validators.

The developers decided during their bi-weekly 'All Core Developers' call on Thursday to begin testing Pectra on February 26 on the Holesky testnet, followed by a second test on the Sepolia testnet on March 5. If these tests are successful, developers will reconvene on March 6 to finalize the upgrade's launch date. According to Tim Beiko, the protocol support lead at the Ethereum Foundation, developers anticipate the upgrade hitting the mainnet in early April. The upgrade aims to address some of the network's long-standing challenges. One crucial change is EIP-7702, which will make using wallets smoother by allowing users to pay gas fees in various cryptocurrencies besides ETH. Additionally, it will enable externally owned accounts (EOAs), which encompass most user-controlled crypto wallets, to support smart contract functionality. This opens up possibilities for wallet developers to enhance user experience with various quality-of-life improvements. Pectra also includes another significant change that increases the maximum amount of ETH a validator can stake from 32 to 2,048 ETH. This change is expected to help large validators consolidate their node operations and expedite the process of setting up new nodes, potentially addressing the current weeks-long queues. The Ethereum community has been facing recent scrutiny due to underperformance of its native token, ether (ETH), and the rise of competitor networks like Solana. Amidst these challenges, developers hope that Pectra will help stabilize the network and reaffirm its position as a leading blockchain platform
