Ethereum developers have finalized plans for the Pectra upgrade, a major overhaul expected to significantly improve speed and affordability. The first phase will launch on the mainnet in mid-March 2025.
After months of rigorous internal stress testing on devnets and testnets, Ethereum (ETH) developers have reached a consensus to transition towards implementing the Pectra upgrade on the mainnet this March. Considered the most significant upgrade to Ethereum (ETH) since the migration to proof of stake, Pectra is anticipated to dramatically enhance the speed and affordability of the network.
The inaugural phase of the Ethereum (ETH) Pectra upgrade will be activated on the mainnet by mid-March 2025. This decision was announced yesterday, January 16, 2025, at the Ethereum All Execution Developers Meeting #203, as reported by Christine Kim, a researcher at Galaxy Digital.Previously, the Ethereum Prague-Electra (Pectra) upgrade was slated to commence in December 2024. However, the timeline has been adjusted, with developers now estimating a full rollout spanning approximately a year and a half. The initial phase of Pectra activation is projected to occur in 2025, while subsequent upgrades are anticipated to be implemented in early 2026.The Ethereum Pectra upgrade is one of the most ambitious hardforks in the history of cryptocurrency. Its most notable feature will be the blurring of the line between on-chain accounts and smart contracts, paving the way for innovative DeFi designs previously considered unfeasible. Additionally, Pectra is set to re-evaluate the Ether staking mechanism within the PoS contract, allowing users to stake up to 2,048 ETH compared to the current limit of 32 ETH. Furthermore, with increased blob space (a specific data structure in Ethereum), some EVM L2 networks, including Starknet and Fuel, could potentially achieve a transaction speed of 1,600 transactions per second.
