A writer who witnessed his brother’s lifelong struggle learned that sustained personal relationships are crucial for people with mental illness.By the time my brother Robert died in 2015, at the age of 72, he had spent more than 50 years in and out of mental hospitals, psych wards and halfway houses in and around New York City. Because our parents had bailed out on him early on and retired to Florida, I was his caretaker and advocate during these years.

But Dr. Alvin Pam, the director of psychology at Bronx State, disagreed, and within a year of treatment under his direction, a seeming miracle occurred. Due in part to a positive reaction to an antipsychotic drug that Robert had never taken before, the change in his behavior was so dramatic that the staff began preparing him for discharge. Robert was clear-thinking; his delusions, tremors and tantrums disappeared.
