Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena has admitted that Bolivian international Erwin Saavedra has been out for longer than they initially expected, as he revealed a setback in the player's return. Saavedra picked up an injury during his first CAF Champions League start, against Al Merrikh in February, as he was taken off in the first half. Mokwena revealed that while the South American was on his way back, he then picked up another knock which delayed his return to the team. Saavedra also missed Bolivia's FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Brazil. It's unclear at this stage when the player will be back in competitive matches, but Mokwena expects him to be back soon.
"Erwin Saavedra is making good progress. We are also happy with that. We had anticipated a shorter layoff from the injury. The layoff has been a little bit longer than what we anticipated, which is a little bit of a disappointment. But we are working around the clock to try to facilitate his return," Mokwena told the Siya crew. "Sometimes we rush players, only to create bigger problems later on.
"Saavedra healed from the initial injury that he encountered in Egypt. On his return to training, he then picked up another injury. We had to take it carefully and monitor the situation. But our medical department is on top of it, which is good. It's a completely different injury, but it could also be just some form of discomfort. We will wait for the MRI."
