We go in-depth with CarnivalRow showrunner erikoleson about the series finale, Philo's journey, Vignette's choice, and even DaredevilBornAgain:

Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS for the Carnival Row finaleWith Carnival Row season 2, showrunner Erik Oleson brought Prime Video's steampunk fantasy series to its epic conclusion. Oleson, who was previously, the showrunner of Daredevil season 3, took over Carnival Row from series creators Travis Beacham and René Echevarria, who oversaw season 1.

Erik Oleson Breaks Down the End of Carnival Row Screen Rant: Did you already know season 2 would be the final season when you signed on to Carnival Row? When was that decision made? I really enjoyed how everybody was trying to do what they thought was right. And it just created conflict because people's passions were so strong towards what they believed in.

And also, honestly, at that point, we were looking down the barrel of COVID. And [we were] thinking, "Well, do we just release a season two that's only five episodes, and that's the cliffhanger, and then come back after COVID and do another five?" And so while we were breaking the story, I had all of these models in my head and in conversations with the network: "Hey, Eric, maybe we're just gonna release five and then another five.

Revealing that Sophie, who we thought was a villain in season 1, and truly was, that she had a secret agenda in season 2 was fascinating to me. That she was masquerading as a villain, really as a social justice warrior, on behalf of the Fae and oppressed women in the Burgue. And that was an interesting angle on it. But I guess there's something wrong with me. I just don't like characters that are purely good or purely evil.

And then the idea that Philo would embody that. Well, how do you bring his inner life to the screen? And doing that kind of split personality, magical realism technique. I was always a fan of that. On Six Feet Under, for instance, where Nate would be talking to is dead dad. There's some great television shows that have externalized a character's inner feelings through this technique.

Also, looking at the shape of the story, season 1 put Philo and Vignette together in love. Well, I'm a writer who doesn't want to end in the same place you begin. It's like, well then, what's the point of the story? You want to progress it in an interesting way. And the other part of it was, I wanted to end it in a way that had the show gone on, or if it were to at some point be resurrected, you could still go there. Sure, Vignette and Philo love each other.

But the great thing about meeting people who are so talented and eager to work with other people that they just enjoy the company of is like, we basically live in a traveling circus of a business. And you get to say, "Hey, come play this revolutionary figure with horns, and I'm gonna put you in prosthetics, and you're gonna be the big bad this season, Joanne, instead of the nun mother of Daredevil." So it's totally fun.
