JAKE. WELL, JERRY LAURIE, THE EFFORT OF POLICE DEPARTMENT’S CONTRACT WITH THE EPHRATA TOWNSHIP IS ALMOST UP AND BECAUSE OF THE LANGUAGE IN THAT DOCUMENT, IF THEY DON’T COME TO A RENEWAL AGREEMENT SOON, THEN THE TOWNSHIP WILL NO LONGER BE COVERED BY THE DEPARTMENT. BY 2025 OF IF BEDFORD TOWNSHIP PULLS AWAY FROM THAT DEAL, WE HAVE LESS OFFICERS. WE HAVE A LESS EFFECTIVE POLICE DEPARTMENT TO DEAL WITH THE BOROUGH. WEST COCALICO AND ADAMSTOWN.

"If Ephrata Township pulls away from that deal, we have less officers," McKim said."We have a less effective police department to deal with the borough ... West Cocalico and Adamstown. So everybody suffers a little bit."Chief McKim said the township accounts for 26-29 percent of the budget of the police force, which equates to 8-9 officers in the department.

"A recent call from a couple of months ago, there was a stabbing that happened. It was in Ephrata Township," McKim said."When the call came in, we were able to have three officers on scene within three minutes.""They're at the sporting events, they're at the football games, they're at the Ephrata Fair," Graham said."They are actually part of the community."It costs $25 per household a year in taxes to keep the Ephrata Police Department.
