From safer highways to cleaner rivers and smarter energy solutions, engineers across Ohio are being recognized for projects that are quietly shaping everyday life in our communities.presented its annual Engineering Excellence Awards, celebrating innovation, safety, sustainability and long-term impact.
ABC6’s Kurt Ludlow served as emcee for the ceremony. While dozens of projects from across the state were honored, several standouts hit especially close to home for Central Ohio drivers, families and businesses. One of the most visible local projects recognized was the I-270 South to I-70 East Flyover Ramp — part of the Far East Freeway improvements near Brice Road., the project added a new two-lane flyover ramp designed to reduce weaving, improve traffic flow and cut down on crashes at one of the region’s most congested interchanges. If your commute feels a little smoother on the east side, this is why. Engineers say the project not only improved safety but also saved the state roughly $800,000 through innovative cost-saving measures.was honored for the Moler Street Overflow Interceptor Sewer project in partnership with the City of Columbus. The new 96-inch interceptor sewer redirects combined sewer overflows away from the Scioto River and into Columbus’ massive OARS tunnel system for treatment. Built underground using trenchless construction methods, the project minimized disruption to neighborhoods while significantly reducing untreated discharge into the river — improving water quality and protecting public health.received an Outstanding Achievement Award for the Franklin-161 Widening project, which expanded eight miles of State Route 161 and I-270 to better support economic development and traffic demand. With an accelerated eight-month design timeline, engineers worked closely with ODOT and contractors to modernize the corridor while maintaining safety and minimizing disruptions. The project positions the region for continued business growth while improving daily commutes.was honored for creating the region’s first modular roundabout in Warren County, built with recycled plastic components and completed in just eight days. Post-construction data shows a 75% reduction in crashes.received recognition for conducting Ohio’s first countywide roundabout prioritization study in Clark County — analyzing more than 5,000 intersections to identify the locations with the greatest potential to reduce crashes. The facility converts up to 190,000 tons of pre-consumer food waste each year into renewable natural gas — enough to power approximately 4,000 homes annually. By diverting organic waste from landfills, the project significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions while supporting local economic growth. From smoother commutes to cleaner waterways and renewable energy production, many of these projects operate behind the scenes. But their impact touches millions of Ohioans every day. This year’s competition featured 24 entries judged by a panel of industry experts, with projects evaluated on complexity, innovation, sustainability and community benefit. As Central Ohio continues to grow, the work recognized at the Engineering Excellence Awards highlights the critical — and often unseen — role engineers play in building safer roads, stronger infrastructure and more sustainable communities. And while the trophies were handed out, the real winners are the people who drive those roads, drink that water and live in the communities these projects serve.Ohio man charged with homicide in wife's shooting death, police say Authorities initially said the shooting appeared to be a burglary and reported signs of forced entry.2:35 UPDATERebecca Auborn was sentenced to four consecutive sentences each of 15 years to life prison on Thursday. This story is being updated.ORIGINAL REPORTINGThe full video showing Columbus billionaire Les Wexner's deposition before a House Oversight panel was just released Thursday afternoon.
