PIQUA, Ohio -- Enhancing the safety, experience, and accessibility for people traveling in Ohio as Governor Mike DeWine joined leaders from the Ohio Department of Transportation , the Ohio Department of Development, and the local community to celebrate the opening of two Miami County I-75 rest areas. The new rest areas near Piqua have been open for a few months now, DeWine on Tuesday officially dedicated it as it becomes one of 36 rest areas updated across the state. "The vision is that when someone is traveling, Fran and I have spent time traveling all over Ohio and other states with our kids. When we stop in a rest area we always look to see pictures or something that shows us what we might see down the road," said DeWine. The governor cut the ribbon on the new Miami County I-75 northbound rest area, which highlights nearby attractions such as downtown Piqua, the Armstrong Air & Space Museum, Wilson Football Factory, the Great Miami Riverway, and the Airstream Heritage Center. There are also old Huffy bicycles on display from the Bicycle Museum of America in New Bremen. The Miami County I-75 southbound rest area is also a new building, which includes many local attractions. In the coming weeks, artifacts from the Garst Museum will be installed and on display, which represent local Darke County residents such as Lowell Thomas and the Lohmann brothers. There will also be a tribute to sharpshooter Annie Oakley, who grew up in Darke County. "Maybe they don't have time on this trip to go a museum or go someplace, but they put that in their head and think later on they'll have the opportunity to do that. It could also be someone outside Ohio who has no idea what's in western Ohio," DeWine said. The rest area also brings new parking spaces for truckers and families a safe place to rest. Chairs are also available for families to take a load off while your children stretch their legs on the storybook trail. All of it to welcome visitors to embrace our state's pride. These rest areas feature universal changing stations in the family restroom, offering an adjustable table in a clean, safe, and private space to meet the personal care needs of individuals with disabilities and medical conditions. They also provide support to caregivers. Twenty-nine rest areas across Ohio will have a universal changing station by the end of 2026, increasing accessibility for all travelers. "We want to show people the greatness of Ohio, the beauty of Ohio, the innovations that are taking place in Ohio and they'll see that on the walls from just walking in here," DeWine said.I-270N closed on Columbus' west side after pedestrian struck, killed 8:15 A.M.
