The last week of the month brings exhibition baseball, a chocolate festival and a craft fair with more than 250 vendors to San Francisco
Here are some of the top events to check out this week in The City. Oracle Park Exhibition Series Before opening their latest Major League Baseball regular season, the San Francisco Giants will host two exhibition games against the Sultanes de Monterrey, a professional baseball team in the Mexican League.
As part of the festivities, the Giants will debut new alternate uniforms that they’ll wear periodically this season. Tickets are available online and range from $10 to $350. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. both days. ‘The Beyond’ film screening Outer Richmond’s Balboa Theater will screen a 35-millimeter version of “The Beyond,” director Lucio Fulci’s 1981 horror film about a woman who inherits a rural hotel that was built on top of a portal to the underworld. Tickets are available online and range from $12.50 to $15. The screening, which takes place at 3630 Balboa St., starts at 7:30 p.m. Violet’s After Dark Employees at the 2301 Clement St. restaurant are extending business by two hours for a celebration that will feature discounted food and drink prices. The restaurant’s resident DJ will be spinning tracks from the 1990s, with the evening highlighting Argonaut brandy.Water-tasting, education, and appreciation workshop Cocktail writer and educator Camper English will host a class at the Mechanics’ Institute Library building, where participants will taste up to 16 different waters. Students will learn how to describe the different flavors and tastes between tap and bottled water, as well as differences between various brands.‘||: Girls :||: Chance :||: Music :||’ Directed by American Conservatory Theater Artistic Director Pam MacKinnon, this play tells the story of four teenage girls who decide to work together after attending a UC Berkeley summer music program. Featuring music by ACT-commissioned playwright Eisa Davis, this performance will feature a post-show conversation with the cast and crew. Tickets are available online and range from $29 to $57.50. The 6:30 p.m. performance will be held at the Strand Theater at 1127 Market St. ‘MJ’ opening night The Tony-winning musical returns to Orpheum Theatre for a nearly two-week engagement. Created by Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and director Christopher Wheeldon, the production revolves around the making of Michael Jackson’s successful 1992 Dangerous World Tour. Tickets are available online and range from $59 to $226.15. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and takes place at 1192 Market St. Midweek Melodies As part of the Illuminate Live outdoor concert series, three Bay Area musicians will take over the Golden Gate Bandshell with a three-hour set. This week’s lineup features musical acts Sara Rodenburg, Frances Ancheta and Deborah Crooks.Academy Day The California Academy of Sciences will celebrate its 173rd anniversary with a day of fun and education. Guests will be able to enjoy a science fair, live animals, musical performances, face-painting stations, a themed photo booth and appearances by Golden State Valkyries mascot Violet and Buddy from “Dinosaur Train.”‘Flex’ preview performance San Francisco Playhouse will stage the West Coast premiere of a play written by Candrice Jones set in 1997 that revolves around a Black girls’ high-school basketball team in Arkansas. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening one hour before that.Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet will join conductor Philippe Jordan and the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Symphony Hall for a program highlighting French classical-music composers. Thibaudet’s performance will feature pieces by Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saens and Hector Berlioz. Tickets are available online, ranging in price from $30 to $185. Thursday’s performance takes place at 2 p.m., while the shows on Friday and Saturday will be held at 7:30 p.m. Francophonie Day The Legion of Honor will spend the day celebrating the French language through cultural performances, music, poetry and theater. Guests will watch a short documentary on Francophonie, as well as discussion panels, poetry readings, live musical performances and a flag procession featuring over 50 French-speaking countries.‘The Flow Show’ Dance Mission Theater will host the 15th edition of a production that explores the intersections between contemporary circus and dance through prop-based movements. Audiences can expect to see jugglers, staff spinners and fan dancers, among other acts. Tickets are available online for $35. Shows on Friday and Saturday take place at 8 p.m., while Sunday’s show starts at 7 p.m. The dance school is located at 3316 24th St. San Francisco International Chocolate Salon More than 20 chocolatiers and exhibitors are taking over the San Francisco County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park for an afternoon filled with chocolates, confections and other sweet treats. In addition to tastings and demonstrations, attendees can listen to panels on topics such as Asian American representation in the industry and what goes into a chocolate’s taste and aroma. Tickets are available online and range in price from $14.12 to $27.24. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. An evening with the Myriad Trio Violinist Che-Yen Chen, harpist Julie Smith Phillips and flutist DeMarre McGill join forces to make music inspired by Debussy’s “Sonate en Trio.” Taking over the Presidio Theatre Performing Arts Center, the trio will perform pieces by composers Jean-Philippe Rameau, Jan Bach, Lita Grier and Ludwig van Beethoven. Tickets are available online and range from $42 to $66. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at 99 Moraga Ave. Renegade Craft Fair Over 250 artists and makers will take over San Francisco’s waterfront as part of the annual spring edition of the Renegade Craft Fair’s market. Items being sold at the event, which takes place at the Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture, include ceramics, apparel, home furnishings and art. Guests will also be able to enjoy a live DJ, hands-on workshops and food vendors.‘Alice in Wonderland’ The Mark Foehringer Dance Project continues celebrating its 30th-anniversary season with a 50-minute dance-theater production based on the classic children’s story written by Lewis Carroll. Combining elements of contemporary dance and ballet, the production also features an 11-piece chamber orchestra, a colorful set and a musical score written by Camille Saint-Saens. Tickets are available online and range from $23.50 to $65.50. Performances are being held at Cowell Theater and take place each day at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. ‘Unstitched: A Celebration of the Saree’ Asian Art Museum employees are exploring the traditional South Asian garment with a day of visual and hands-on experiences. Sarees will be on view in Samsung Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a 3 p.m. fashion show also taking place in the venue. Guests will also be able to participate in tie-dye drop-in and block-printing workshops. The event is included with general admission. Tickets range from $14 to $20. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
