The former New Caney ISD Keefer Crossing Middle School has become the training ground for law enforcement and emergency services, and, possibly, school district police agencies aimed at helping prevent an event such as the Uvalde school shooting.
Jason Millsaps, head of emergency management for the Montgomery County, speaks beside Judge Mark Keough as officials tour the former New Caney ISD Keefer Crossing Middle School the county is leasing to serve as the training site, Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022, in New Caney. Montgomery County Commissioners Court approved $325,000, six-month lease for six months using reclassified American Rescue Plan Act funds.
“Unfortunately, we’re in a time now when we have to really worry about school safety more than we ever have,” said Zemlicka, who oversees school safety at the center, which covers 57 school districts, including all the districts in Montgomery County. Conroe ISD has the third-largest police force in the county and regularly trains with other agencies.
Willis ISD also plan to use the school for its police force training, said Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable and Director of Security at Willis ISD Lt. Leslee Zemlicka. “They come in and they set it up how they want to train in their section,” County Judge Mark Keough said. “We’ll turn it over to them to do what they need.”Departments using the facility can bring their own trainer, or the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will provide a trainer. Each group must provide their own training munitions.
“I’m hoping that the state of Texas will step up,” Rep. Steve Toth, R-The Woodlands, said at the tour of the facility. “It’s our hope that this is going to be emulated, but that the state will step up, help out with this to pay its fair share so that other regional players can come to Montgomery County and benefit from it.”
