Review of the season opening concert by the Orpheus Chamber Singers.
, setting Dylan Thomas’ famous poem, a piano introduction establishes a pleasantly piquant harmonic language. By turns dreamy and excited, in telling contrasts of voices and textures, the choral writing dramatizes the poet’s reminiscences of more innocent times.
Erin Roth Thomas of the Orpheus Chamber Singers sings a solo during a performance of John Corigilano's "Fern Hill" at Zion Lutheran Church in Dallas, Texas on Oct. 22, 2022. sets four Walt Whitman poems evoking Civil War scenes, with a surprising variety of guitar effects interspersed and accompanying.
Solemn music imagines sleeping soldiers, others dead and bloated, but also a tender — and quite surprising — kiss from a soldier to a dead enemy. “Beat! Beat!
