This article critiques Elon Musk's 'Department of Government Efficiency' (DOGE), arguing that its efforts to eliminate federal waste are superficial and lack real impact. It suggests that DOGE's focus on diversity and inclusion programs is a distraction from tackling the substantial issue of military spending.
For the past week or so, Elon Musk 's so-called 'Department of Government Efficiency,' has been scrutinizing government databases in an attempt to identify and eliminate federal waste. However, it's important to acknowledge that these efforts are relatively minor; insignificant cuts like these will never amount to the substantial $2 trillion Musk claims to be targeting.
This isn't a novel concept; Americans have been advocating against excessive warfare spending since at least 1637 - long before the United States even existed. For instance, the Algonquin people famously resisted taxation for military purposes centuries ago. Now, with a new administration in power, DOGE has a unique opportunity to make a truly impactful change: eliminate the single largest expense burdening the entire nation. By redirecting the trillions allocated to nuclear weapons, the government could address pressing domestic issues. Imagine the possibilities: 10 percent of that budget could provide a year's worth of public housing for almost one million Americans. Or, if DOGE genuinely aimed to tackle wasteful and fraudulent spending, it could investigate the Pentagon, which has a history of overbudgeting for basic supplies in order to artificially inflate its budget. In late 2024, it was revealed that Boeing was overcharging the Pentagon by as much as 8,000 percent for commonplace supplies. This situation highlights the potential for significant savings through strategic budget reallocation. However, it might also be the clearest indication that the entire DOGE initiative is merely a facade of posturing and showmanship. If Musk and his team are truly committed to fiscal responsibility, they would focus their efforts on dismantling the bloated military-industrial complex rather than engaging in symbolic gestures targeting DEI initiatives. Musk's current focus on diversity and inclusion programs seems to be a calculated attempt to appease a specific audience, while avoiding the truly impactful but politically sensitive issue of military spending. It's easier to criticize DEI programs than to challenge the deeply entrenched interests of the defense industry. This selective focus raises serious questions about the sincerity and effectiveness of DOGE's stated mission
