Elon Musk's ambitious plan to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is facing potential roadblocks as key staff members, including legal counsel Bill McGinley, are leaving the initiative. This comes amidst reports of friction between Musk and other incoming staff, including Vivek Ramaswamy who previously stepped down. While Trump integrated DOGE into the federal government, Musk's exact role and involvement remain unclear, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest.
Elon Musk 's plan for the new Department of Government Efficiency ( DOGE ) is facing potential turmoil following a series of recent developments. Bill McGinley, appointed as DOGE 's legal counsel in December, is reportedly preparing to return to the private sector, according to a Thursday report by The Wall Street Journal.
In a statement to the newspaper, McGinley expressed his unwavering support for President Trump, Vice President Vance, and the teams within the White House and administration, without specifically mentioning Musk. The White House has been contacted for comment via email, and Musk has been reached through X, the social media platform he owns. This departure follows Vivek Ramaswamy's exit, amidst reports of a disagreement with Musk and other incoming staff. Trump had initially selected billionaires Musk and Ramaswamy to lead DOGE, a nongovernmental task force tasked with identifying strategies to reduce federal spending and enhance government efficiency. However, one of the executive orders Trump signed on his first day in office formally integrated DOGE into the federal government, renaming the U.S. Digital Service as the U.S. DOGE Service. The Digital Service, established by President Barack Obama in 2014, aimed to modernize the government's technological approach.DOGE has already faced legal challenges contesting its operations. Trump's executive order outlined DOGE's objective as 'implementing the President's DOGE Agenda, by modernizing Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity.' This is a significantly more limited scope than the ambitious mission Musk has publicly championed, which involves substantial spending cuts and a fundamental overhaul of the federal government. Musk and Ramaswamy pledged in a November op-ed published by the Journal to significantly reduce the federal budget and oversee 'mass headcount reductions across the federal bureaucracy.' Musk had claimed in October that he could slash the federal budget by 'at least $2 trillion,' a figure representing approximately one-third of annual government spending, which budget experts deemed unrealistic. In a recent interview, Musk revised his goal, stating that achieving the $2 trillion reduction would be the 'best-case outcome' but that there was a 'good shot' of trimming the budget by $1 trillion.Trump's order also established a temporary organization within DOGE, overseen by an administrator reporting to the White House chief of staff. However, the order does not mention Musk, and the administration has not disclosed if he will formally join the government in his role with the initiative. His involvement could raise questions regarding potential violations of federal conflict-of-interest laws unless he divests his businesses—including X, Tesla, and SpaceX—or recuses himself from government matters involving them. Musk, the world's wealthiest individual, has become a prominent member of Trump's inner circle since contributing over $100 million to support his presidential campaign. However, his recent criticism of a new artificial intelligence initiative shortly after Trump's announcement is unlikely to be well-received by the president, who highly values loyalty. Musk has also faced accusations of performing a Nazi salute during Trump's inauguration
