On Monday, friends and family will honor the Ellis County detention officer killed by an inmate while on the job last week. A memorial service will be held for officer Isaiah Bias.Bias, 28, served the Ellis County Sheriff's Office for nearly 7 years. The service will be held this morning at the Midlothian Conference Center at 11 a.m.The community is invited to attend the service.Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman said he’s known Officer Bias since he was about 14 years old.
He met him when he was a teen in the Explorer program looking to get into law enforcement.Bias left the sheriff’s office in 2016 to get a degree from Navarro College. He came back and was promoted to corporal in detention services in 2022.As the oldest sibling in his family, Bias had just become an uncle a week before his death. 'Officer Isaiah Bias exemplified the values of Ethics, Leadership, Loyalty, Integrity, and Service,' said Sheriff Norman. 'His legacy will continue to inspire us all. We are extremely grateful for the community support during this difficult time.' Officer Bias was killed while putting an inmate in his cell on Dec. 16.Investigators say 45-year-old Arron Thompson was booked into jail last month on three counts of assault on a public servant and evading arrest. He was in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day. An arrest warrant affidavit for Thompson says that when Bias approached Thompson to put him back into his cell he punched the, knocking him to the ground. Thompson then allegedly began choking Bias and hitting him in the head with his fist, knee and foot.Thompson is now charged with capital murder. It’s up to the district attorney if this will be tried as a death penalty case
