The Elgin City Council this week approved spending $525,570 for a custom treehouse and other playground amenities from Alabama-based Game Time. Part of the cost will be covered by a $92,000 grant from Game Time, which is participating in a national playground research project, City Manager Rick Kozal said.

Redevelopment has been done in phases, with the first including a small shelter, tennis court and basketball court in 2017. Phase two, completed in 2018, added a parking lot and practice athletic fields. The most recent phase, which got underway last year after Elgin issued $5 million in bonds to upgrade city parks, includes the playground, another athletic field, waterless restrooms, walking paths and a dog park. The goal is to make it a regional park, a designation based on its size.
