Mary and Joseph Jones awoke to find out the gunfire they heard overnight was closer than they realized.
MONTGOMERY , Ala. - 89-year-old Mary Jones and 98-year-old Joseph Jones have been collecting memories in their house on Montgomery ’s Emerson Street off Rosa Parks Avenue for around 50 years.“I started crying, and I said, ‘We have got to leave,’ and he said, ‘Why do you have to leave? You paid for your home,’ I said I’d rather give up the home than to give up my life,” Mary Jones said.
Neither Joseph Jones nor Mary Jones got up to survey the damage until the following morning, and when they saw it they were thankful they came out alive. Their niece, Diana Mitchell, comes to check on them every morning. She’s a lifelong Montgomery resident and feels violence in the city is worse than it’s ever been.
A call to Montgomery police wasn’t made until the following morning. When they got there, Mitchell claims they told her this was the third house shot by who they believe is the same shooter.
