Police said the 75-year-old victim stepped in to help his wife and another woman after hearing a commotion at a unit complex in Torquay.
An elderly man who came to the defence of his wife and another woman has been killed near Hervey Bay, allegedly by a younger man believed to be a stranger to them.
The incident unfolded about 8pm on Friday at a unit complex on The Esplanade at Torquay, where detectives allege the 75-year-old heard a commotion involving the man who would soon be charged with his murder.“ went downstairs to help , where he was confronted by the male offender and he subsequently lost his life as a result of that second altercation,” Detective Inspector Gary Pettiford said.Pettiford alleged the victim’s wife had also been assaulted.
The victim did not appear to be injured with a weapon, he said. A post-mortem examination early next week will determine the cause of death.“She is as you’d expect in a situation like this,” Pettiford said. “It’s hard to describe, I’ve never been through it myself, but it’s horrific, as you’d imagine. Her lifelong partner has lost his life trying to help her.”
Police are calling for witnesses and dashcam footage from between 7.30pm and 8.30pm. The unit complex was between the Torquay Hotel and the Beach House Hotel. The alleged offender was charged with one count each of murder, serious assault, demanding property with menace, and two counts of possessing dangerous drugs .Get the inside word on the news, sport, food, people and places Brisbane is talking about.
