KwaZulu-Natal Education has decided to shut down over 900 schools.

The department blames this on low enrollments due to urbanisation, violence and schools built on private land.It says the problem is a staffing issue and that more teachers need to be hired.

"In the province of KwaZulu-Natal there are thousands of educators and graduates who are staying at home and the department is not filling the key vacancies," said the IFP's Thami Ntuli. "Even if they had to fill, it will take a very long time. In some of the schools they no longer do that cause their intention is to close down those schools.

"The first thing that they must address is to ensure that they employ those educators to the schools so that the quality education will be provided in each and every rural and other schools in the province of KwaZulu-Natal," Ntuli said.
