Back in 2020, when this board endorsed Crenshaw for a second term, we noted his out-sized public stature andto his party and then-President Donald Trump. A lot has changed since then.
Of course, those concerns had already been litigated and rejected by courts at all levels. We asked: wasn’t it more escalating to give oxygen to lies? It’s both a condemnation and a defense of Crenshaw that he actually seemed to believe this. Not even a month later, on January 6, insurrection-minded extremists took matters into their own hands, violently attacking law enforcement, desecrating our Capitol, and only narrowly failing in their bid to overthrow our democracy. To his credit, after the tear gas cleared, Crenshaw broke with many in his party and voted to certify the election results.
In his recent screening with us, Crenshaw said he didn’t regret his actions leading up to the insurrection, saying he still believes litigation could have quelled unrest. He won’t admit that he clearly misjudged the explosive power of Trump’s lies.
