Editorial: A bizarre State of the State address
Does this look like where the people’s work is done? It’s not — it’s a private business. It’s where Gov. Greg Abbott chose to give a closed State of the State address.Having vanquished Republican challengers during last year’s primary before obliterating Democrat Beto O’Rourke in the November’s gubernatorial election, Gov. Greg Abbott has a mandate from voters. But that doesn’t make him a king.Thursday night, which had a strange “the state is I” vibe with little regard for transparency.
What is supposed to be a Texas Constitution-mandated address given by the governor at the beginning of each legislative session on the condition of the state was instead a free political ad for Abbott and a free commercial for Noveon Magnetics. Abbott’s emergencies include property tax relief; ending COVID restrictions “forever”; education freedom ; school safety ; ending “revolving door bail” ; border security; and the fentanyl crisis.
