Titans tag a pair of relievers for five runs en route to a 6-2 win in the Lions Tournament’s Open Division play.

Eastlake’s Colton Maxwell pumps his fist after a strikeout during the fourth inning of a high school baseball game against Christian Brothers March 30, 2026 in Chula Vista, Calif. The senior at Christian Brothers Academy from New Jersey pitched five innings Monday against Eastlake High School, allowing two hits, striking out eight and retiring the final 15 hitters he faced until a pitch limit forced him out of the game.

That’s when Eastlake, ranked No. 4 in San Diego County, went to work. The Titans tagged a pair of Colts relievers for five runs on four hits and a pair of walks en route to a 6-2 win in the Lions Tournament’s Open Division play. “He was giving it to us,” said Eastlake leadoff hitter Hamza Hatahet, who opened the game with a double off the center-field wall against Iwanyk, then hit into a double play. “He had really good breaking stuff and his fastball was elite. He definitely can play with the big boys.” Eastlake center fielder Joel Vargas, considered an elite player, struck out and grounded to short against Iwanyk.Christian Brothers is playing in California for the first time.Kenney had Iwanyk on a 65-pitch limit. He threw 69 pitches. “I was bummed when coach came out in the fifth and said that was my last hitter,” said Iwanyk, who has committed to play at Michigan. “I felt really good. But the coaches are trying to be smart, looking at the long run. Eastlake is an incredible team. Really gritty. I couldn’t just throw my fastball and beat them. “We knew about Vargas. His first at-bat, I threw him eight straight sliders and finally struck him out. I knew if I threw a fastball and missed my spot, he’d barrel it up.” Christian Brothers’ Dylan Iwanyk celebrates after a strikeout during the fourth inning of a high school baseball game against Eastlake March 30, 2026 in Chula Vista, Calif. Iwanyk also contributed at the plate, hitting a second-inning Colton Maxwell fastball over the fence in right-center field. Maxwell, who was making his first start of the season, had pitched just one inning in two prior appearances. He threw a 79-pitch complete game to improve to 2-0.“I threw 45% splitters,” Maxwell said. “That’s my go-to pitch.” The Eastlake defense turned three double plays behind him, including a nifty 6-4-3, started by shortstop Zowen Watson, to end the game. Trailing 2-1 in the sixth and with Iwanyk out of the game, Eastlake struck for five runs. Hatahet drove in one, Vargas doubled in two and pinch-hitter Erick Villeda jumped on the first pitch to double home a pair. “Statistically, the team that scores three or more runs in an inning usually wins,” said Eastlake coach Ramon Orozco. “We got behind, but we didn’t panic. We knew Iwanyk was on a pitch count. If we could keep the game close, we had a chance once he was out. Both teams are back in action Tuesday. Eastlake hosts Lake Balboa Birmingham at 1 p.m. Christian Brothers is at Point Loma for a 1 p.m. game.Christian Brothers flew to San Diego on Friday, practiced at Hoover High School on Saturday, toured San Diego State’s Tony Gwynn Stadium, then went to the Tigers-Padres game. The Colts practiced at Mission Bay High on Sunday. “If we didn’t do anything else, going to the Padres game was worth the trip,” Kenney said. “We had a suite in the Western Metals Building. It was awesome.”He especially loved when Padres closer Mason Miller entered the game in the ninth inning “Seeing him come in, the lights go out, the music was blaring. It was great,” Iwanyk said. “Then, on top of all that, they shot off fireworks. Great experience.”San Diego loses population as immigration nosedives.
