A corporal in the East Cleveland Police Department last week received a demotion following misconduct while on the scene of last month’s crash involving an RTA bus that injured multiple people and damaged a local church.
EAST CLEVELAND , Ohio - , an East Cleveland patrol officer found an AR-15 pistol and an unloaded magazine in the car driven by the alleged suspect, Christopher Cotton.Covell said he brought Cotton’s firearm back to the station with the intent of returning it to him after his release from the hospital.
The statement said Cotton previously worked for the East Cleveland Police Department and ended his employment in good standing. Covell’s statement said he did not have any knowledge of the RTA Police Department’s investigation until he was on scene for nearly 30 minutes. “Had I known that RTA PD was going to treat this incident as a criminal investigation, I would of turned the firearm over into their custody, despite the lack of elements that created a criminal act by possessing it during this incident,”“My intentions were to return Cotton’s property to him, due to my knowledge of this incident not being criminal in nature.
