Kellen Moore, the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, is in the running for three head coaching jobs despite the team's playoff preparations. While he dedicates himself to his current duties, including formulating a strategy to counter the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round, Moore acknowledges the exciting opportunity and emphasizes his focus on the upcoming game.
Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is in the running for three head coaching positions, a development that doesn't surprise team players and coaches. The Friday afternoon offered a break from the NovaCare Complex, allowing for time with family and friends before the final preparations on Saturday and Sunday's divisional round matchup against the Los Angeles Rams at Lincoln Financial Field.
This downtime included a pair of interviews for Moore - one with a team he once played for and coached. Moore met with the Dallas Cowboys Friday afternoon regarding their head coaching vacancy and interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars later in the day. He also has an interview scheduled with the New Orleans Saints on Saturday. The Eagles, who finished the regular season with the league's eighth-best offense in total yards per game (367.2), won 14 games this season. Moore's work has garnered attention, and he is once again being considered for a head coaching role. While these interviews are part of a process that Moore hopes will lead to his first head coaching job, they are taking place just days before a playoff game. Moore insists, however, that they have not distracted him from his duties, including preparing a game plan to counter a Rams defense that excelled in their wild-card win over the Minnesota Vikings. 'You don't worry about it too much,' Moore said. 'You really do focus on the week, and those things take care of themselves. Obviously, those opportunities come to teams that have success and are doing well on the field, so that's where your focus is.' This isn't the first time Moore has been interviewed for a head coaching position. The Eagles considered him during the 2021 offseason before hiring Nick Sirianni. Having spent a season with the Eagles, Moore said he's picked up a few things from Sirianni that he'd implement if he were offered a head coaching job. 'I think what he does an excellent job of is leading this team emotionally and from a leadership standpoint, but also game management - how he manages the game and the week,' Moore said. 'When it comes to situational football, the amount of time we invest in it, he does an excellent job, so it’s been a really fun process for me.' 'I think there’s sometimes a misconception that coaches don’t get any time to relax at the end of the week,' Sirianni said. 'There’s time on Fridays and Saturday afternoons for that. Those are the moments when, in these scenarios, guys have earned the right to interview for jobs. We’re not the only ones in this position. There are a lot of teams playing this weekend with coaches doing the same. Kellen is ready, and he’s handled it like a pro all week. I never doubted he would.' Sirianni said Moore’s interviews are well-deserved, crediting him with the offense’s success this season. Mailata praised Moore’s ability to explain the reasoning behind plays and how each play is part of a larger strategy. 'I’m happy for him and whatever happens, happens,' Mailata said. 'But then again, with all those interviews lined up, I’m not surprised. The schemes are just bulletproof. He likes to play chess and use the long game, using one play to set up other plays up. Honestly, it’s a pretty fun thing to see when you’re actually executing the plays. There is a lot of tactical warfare going on there. For me as a player this year, he’s kind of opened my eyes to play-calling a little bit more, understanding why he’s calling certain plays and why certain formations marry up with other formations.’ Jordan Mailata, who started the regular-season finale against the Giants, and saw time in two games this season, said that Moore had shown a trait that successful head coaches have shown. 'I think he’s a levelheaded guy that can make split-second decisions at a high level,' McKee said. 'He’s a phenomenal coach and I can’t say enough good things about him. He’s very knowledgeable about the game. He always has answers to all the questions, and he wants everybody to be on the same page. It motivates guys to just get better.
