Dynamo blitz Fire, advance to U.S. Open Cup semifinals for first time since 2018
Dynamo forward Aliyu Ibrahim, pictured earlier this season, scored twice to pace Tuesday’s U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal victory at Chicago.BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — The Dynamo cruised past the Chicago Fire for a 4-1 victory Tuesday night at SeatGeek Stadum to advance to the semifinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Houston will play the winner of Wednesday's West Region match between Real Salt Lake and LA Galaxy in the Aug. 23 semifinal, the Dynamo's first since. The site for the semifinal will be decided during a draw at noon Thursday televised on the CBS Sports Golazo Network. On Tuesday, the Dynamo got two goals from forward Aliyu Ibrahim. The first came in the 31st minute off an assist from Adalberto Carrasquilla, with Ibrahim's second tally coming unassisted in the 59th minute.
Amine Bassi also scored on a penalty kick in the 12th minute and Nelson Quiñónes notched his first goal with Houston to cap the scoring in the 74th minute off a Héctor Herrera assist. The Dynamo return to MLS competition at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, when they host LAFC at Shell Energy Stadium.
