Millions of people on Universal Credit received a £20 weekly uplift during the pandemic.

The Department for Work and Pensions has been urged to make an assessment on the “potential merits” of introducing a £25 weekly uplift for everyone on Universal Credit and to extend the additional financial help to people on Employment Support Allowance .

Millions of households across Great Britain are set to receive the next instalment of the £900 cost of living payment support, worth £300 this Autumn, with a further £299 due next Spring. No confirmed details about a payment window or the qualifying period have been announced by the UK Government yet.

When is the payment due? The only information confirmed by the UK Government is that the payment for £300 will be made in the Autumn. This payment will be tax-free, will not count towards the benefit cap, and will not have any impact on existing benefit awards.Who needs to apply? Nobody needs to apply for any of the cost of living payments, these will be made automatically to eligible claimants in receipt of a qualifying benefit.

Universal Credit ‘nil awards’ Guidance on GOV.UK explains: "You will not be eligible for the Cost of Living Payment if your benefit is reduced to £0 for the qualifying period." This is sometimes called a ‘nil award’.You may still be eligible for a cost of living payment if your benefit is reduced to £0 and one of the following applies:

People can check their eligibility for Pension Credit using the online calculator on GOV.UK here or by calling the Pension Credit helpline on 0800 99 1234. We also have a handy guide to the benefit here. Pension Credit tops up a person's income to a minimum of £201.05 per week for single pensioners and to £306.85 for couples or more if a person has a disability or caring responsibilities.
