The DWP will be granted powers to take money directly out of bank accounts and wages as part of a crackdown on benefit fraud. Under new plans being drawn up by ministers, private companies including airlines will have to hand over information about suspected fraudsters, according to the Sunday Telegraph.
Currently, if the DWP wants to get money back from people who have been overpaid benefits it has to take them to court The bill, announced by the Prime Minister during the Labour Party conference in September is intended to target benefit fraud by “modernising” the Department for Work and Pensions in an effort to save £1.6 billion over the next five years.
