Dozens of postcodes are eligible for the payment
As the temperatures dropped across the UK and the recent arctic blast did its worst, freezing temperatures were felt across the country. Some areas were worse than others, but that extremely cold weather triggered a series of cold weather payments, which means thousands of households are eligible to receive a £25 boost to their finances.
The extremely cold snap should be on its way out soon. Although Notts is still experiencing temperature lows of between -1 and -3 for the next couple of days. But by Sunday, the thermometer should be rising. The Met Office is currently forecasting highs of 6 degrees on Sunday, December 18, and 13 degrees on Monday, December 19.
So, just how are cold weather payments triggered? According to the government website, you’ll get a payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees Celsius or below over 7 consecutive days. This rule is in place between 1 November and 31 March and, if triggered, will mean those eligible will get £25 for each 7 day period of very cold weather.
Those eligible do not need to apply, it will be paid automatically. The bank top-up will be in eligible people’s bank account within 14 days of the trigger and cold weather payments do not affect other benefits.
