Six different benefits are eligible for the payment
Winter weather has officially hit with temperatures drastically dropping across the UK, which means many households will be putting on their heating to keep warm. The Department for Work and Pensions is offering Cold Weather Payments for extra financial support to low-income households over the winter months with six different benefits eligible.
As Birmingham Live reports, household energy debt has hit a five-year high of £216 for the average household, an increase on the £190 seen at this time last year, with the number of homes that owe money to their supplier rising from 2,800,000 to 3,200,000.A number of schemes run to offer additional financial help with heating costs.
This year's Cold Weather Payment scheme opens on November 1 and runs to the end of March 2024. In order to be eligible, you must be in receipt of specific benefits. The temperature readings that decide if it's cold enough in your area are based on recordings made at the nearest local weather station.
