Opposition Leader Peter Dutton is set to spark a war on a big Australia at the next election by announcing in his budget reply speech on Thursday night a cut to net migration of as much as 100,000 a year.

The government promised in its budget Tuesday night to bring down net overseas migration from the figure of 518,000 last year to 395,000 in 2023-24, down to 260,000 in 2022-23.Sky News understands in recent weeks the Coalition has discussed almost halving the net migration forecast and restricting net migration to 160,000 a year.

It comes after Senator Pauline Hanson blasted Labor on migration, calling it the “biggest problem we have” after Treasurer Jim Chalmers handed down the latest Budget which included billions of dollars for housing initiatives
