Union Center Elementary School in Wheeler was one of the first schools to participate in programming put on by The Dunes Learning Center when it first opened in Porter 25 years ago. They are still bringing their students out for an overnight experience at the facility in Indiana Dunes National Park a quarter of a century later.

Union Center teacher Samantha Allen and her fifth graders were spending the night Wednesday and Thursday. After settling into their cabins and having lunch they set out on an educational hike, A Walk Through Time, to familiarize themselves with the nearby landmarks the camp has to offer. At Chellberg Farm they met up with Ida, a 25-year-old Swedish farm hand from 1909. She told them about her day, which began when she got up at 4 a.m.

Union Center fifth-grader Wyatt Learman tests his balance on apple-picking stilts with help from environmental education fellow Margo Taylor, dressed as a Swedish farmer, during the Dunes Learning Center 'Walk Through Time' event on Wednesday, October 11, 2023. That’s exactly the goal of Frog in the Bog: To teach kids about land use over time, as well as local ecosystems, and scientific legacy. All on-site programs are overnight.
