Drizzle Cheesecakes, the beloved chocolate-dipped cheesecake phenomenon, has opened its first standalone storefront in Irving, Texas. The shop offers a variety of decadent flavors, including the award-winning Biscoff Delight. El Gidi, the Canadian native and Olympic swimmer behind Drizzle Cheesecakes, also offers a selection of espresso-based drinks using Houston's Katz Coffee Velvet Espresso beans.
Texas weather is a force to be reckoned with. Freezing temperatures wield the power to shut the city down. What freezing temperatures won’t do is stop Dallasites from lining up for Drizzle Cheesecakes near Irving 's Toyota Music Factory. Cheesecake enthusiasts braved below-freezing temperatures as they waited in a winding line to get a fix of chocolate-dipped cheesecake on a stick.
Canadian native Stephen El Gidi’s Drizzle Cheesecake has become a North Texas favorite in the concessionary circuit. The treat made its first appearance at Six Flags Over Texas’ 2021 Holiday in the Park. The chocolate-dipped triangles on a stick stopped us in our tracks. Groups of people gathered around the hut passing around massive chunks of chocolate goodness. We had to jump in line. The first bite of Drizzle Cheesecakes is unforgettable: thick Belgian chocolate, creamy New York-style cheesecake and a crumbling crust melt in your mouth. One bite isn’t enough. In 2023, a Lotus-Biscoff-covered version with caramel drizzle called Biscoff Delight made waves at the culinary extravaganza of the year: the State Fair of Texas. Biscoff Delight won the coveted prize for sweets, beating out bourbon banana caramel sopapillas, a fried cherry pie and a dessert version of a tostada. We stopped by the Drizzle Cheesecake’s storefront debut on a Wednesday night, hoping a weeknight wouldn’t be as crowded as opening weekend. There wasn’t a line, but there were no empty seats in sight. The storefront has shades of brown, cream and the occasional faux greenery. Warm brown, fluted wall paneling lines the walls. Light wooden tables dot the seating area. Cream-colored linen seating, a courageous choice for a chocolate-filled dessert shop, makes for a comfy environment. There’s one plain cheesecake option for $11.99 with a choice of white or milk chocolate sauce. The remaining eight gluttonous options are $12.99. Hazelnut Deluxe is a milk-chocolate-dipped cheesecake topped with crushed hazelnuts, drizzled with Nutella and caramel, then crowned with a slice of strawberry. Strawberry Crunch comes dipped in white chocolate with a strawberry shortcake coating and a white chocolate and strawberry drizzle on top. The award-winning Biscoff Delight is here for year-round consumption. Peanut Butter Dreams is a slice of cheesecake dipped in milk chocolate with a crunchy peanut butter coating, peanut butter drizzle and crushed peanut butter cups. The peanut butter flavors subtly peek through the cheesecake and chocolate. Oreo Wonder is seamless. The white chocolate coating, crushed Oreos and white chocolate drizzle blend effortlessly with the cheesecake. The Churro Crumble is a dance between flavors and texture. The prominent cinnamon-sugar flavor of crushed churro crumbles was familiar. The thick chocolate coating added depth. The velvety cheesecake contrasts consistency. Drizzle uses Houston-based Katz's Coffee Velvet Expresso beans. Not only is El Gidi a two-time Olympic Games alumnus (he competed in the 100-meter butterfly in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics), he’s also a barista who manned the espresso machine brewing Houston’s Katz Coffee signature Velvet Espresso. Espresso-based drinks range from $3.50 to $5.50. Syrups, alternative milk or iced coffee options are available for an additional 50 cents. There’s a cortado, flat white, cappuccino and macchiato. Naturally, hot chocolate is also available. We ordered a delightful almond latte, which nicely rounded off the cheesecake’s sweetness. The chocolate complemented the heavy-bodied espresso blend’s orange, brown sugar and cinnamon tasting notes. It was just the right touch to ward off sugar overload. Drizzle Cheesecakes, 310 W.
