As gas prices rise across Utah and the country, many drivers are asking the same question: Are they being price-gouged? According to data from Gas Buddy, the average price of gasoline per gallon in Utah on Monday was $3.
94. That is up over a dollar from last month's average of $2.75 per gallon. Tyson Slocum, energy program director with Public Citizen, said the recent spike is driven by the war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. “One out of every five barrels of oil in the world passes through that region,” Slocum said. “That has totally disrupted global oil markets.” Even though the United States is the world’s largest oil producer, Slocum said domestic supply does little to shield Americans from rising costs because oil is priced globally.“If things don’t calm down a little bit, I might have to drop out of college, find a job, and go from there,” said Macki Atkinson, a college student who lives in Kamas.“It’s just one of those things you have to budget for,” Gabrielle Logoczo said. “I need to get to work, I need to go to the grocery store.” While price gouging is often blamed for sudden spikes, Slocum said most state laws only apply to gas stations, not the larger companies upstream. “There aren’t any laws governing wholesale price gouging, and there’s no federal rules on it,” he said. He explained that the price of crude oil has not risen at the same rate as wholesale gasoline, meaning refineries are able to purchase crude oil, refine it into gasoline, and sell it to the gas companies at a premium, widening their profit margins in the process. “When prices go up, that means bigger profits for oil producers and for refiners. Not so much for American consumers,” he said. "And the refiners are posting record profits." Higher fuel prices don’t just affect drivers. They can increase costs across the broader economy, including food, shipping, and air travel. “We’re seeing prices go up for everything from transportation, fertilizer to delivery,” Slocum said. “That all gets passed on to consumers.” He explains that, even if global tensions ease and an end to the war in Iran comes soon, prices may not fall quickly. He warns that while uncertainty in global oil markets remains, prices could stay elevated for weeks or longer. "Prices have spiked for one reason, and that is because the United States is engaged in a military confrontation with Iran, and we did not properly plan for," Slocum said.Parker Kingston, a former wide receiver at Brigham Young University, was scheduled to make an appearance in a St. George court today on a felony rape charge.DuA man in his 40s died after Sandy police fired multiple shots during a domestic-related incident, the Sandy Police Department said.According to the department,A 75-year-old woman was killed and three others were taken to the hospital after a rear-end crash on State Road 201 near Magna on Sunday. The crash happened aroJerrod Calhoun has left Utah State to become the next head coach at Cincinnati.According to CBS Sports, the deal that would bring Calhoun to Cincinnati has beenA 22-year-old man was shot while driving through the Rose Park neighborhood in Salt Lake on Monday morning.A spokesperson with the Salt Lake City Police Depart
