The man was killed around 12:20 p.m. when a maroon SUV driven by a 69-year-old woman crashed through the plate glass windows of the building in the 600 block of Newark Avenue in Elizabeth. A 72-year-old man near the front window was fatally injured, city officials said.
A 59-year-old man on a treadmill sustained cuts and abrasions, while the driver suffered injuries when the airbag deployed. “All individuals who were hospitalized have since been released,” said Ruby Contreras, a city spokeswoman. The driver, whose name was not released, is cooperating with police and won’t be charged, Contreras said. Video posted to social media showed a frantic scene inside the gym moments after the crash. Witnesses sobbed as gym members pulled debris off a victim lying on the floor.
