A Long Island driver lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a Chinese restaurant, marking the second time in a year that a vehicle has collided with the eatery. Both the driver and a passenger in a parked car were taken to the hospital for treatment.
A Long Island driver lost control and slammed into a Chinese restaurant in a fiery crash Monday night, marking the second time in about a year that a motorist has struck the eatery, according to police. Authorities said a 57-year-old woman was driving a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV north on Broadway in Farmingdale around 11:20 p.m. when she veered off the road and rammed into two parked cars: a 2017 Ford Mustang and a 2022 Volkswagen Jetta.
The series of collisions culminated in a blaze when the Hyundai driver crashed into the Great Wall Chinese restaurant, located in a strip mall on Broadway and Boundary Avenue.Photos released by the Farmingdale Fire Department on their Facebook page reveal the Hyundai slightly tilted on its side, wedged against the restaurant with flames engulfing its front end and rising higher than the single-story building. In the aftermath, the front portion of the red SUV is shown as a total wreck, scorched by the fire as firefighters surround it. Both the Hyundai driver and a 30-year-old man who was inside the Mustang were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment, police stated. This incident mirrors a similar crash about a year ago, where an allegedly intoxicated Mercedes driver was traveling on North Broadway when she veered off the road and collided with a parked Toyota, police said at the time. The Jan. 26, 2024 crash sent the unoccupied Toyota through the storefront of the Chinese restaurant, with the Mercedes directly behind it, according to police reports. The Mercedes driver, 39-year-old Lauren Potter, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and third-degree assault. Potter, who sustained an ankle injury and complained of chest pain, along with a 51-year-old woman who was inside the restaurant at the time, were both transported to a local hospital following last year's incident, police said
