A 40-year-old driver in Utah County was arrested on charges of kidnapping and driving under the influence after a passenger grabbed the steering wheel and swerved toward highway troopers during a DUI investigation. The passenger, who had met the driver at a bar, reportedly feared for his life and attempted to get the police's attention. The driver displayed signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and a strong smell of alcohol.
A driver was arrested in Utah County after police said the passenger grabbed the steering wheel and jerked it toward troopers on the side of Interstate 15. Joshua Bavaro, 40, was arrested on Saturday facing charges for kidnapping and driving under the influence, according to arrest documents.
Utah Highway Patrol troopers were investigating a DUI when a vehicle appeared to intentionally swerve toward them. Police said the vehicle barely missed the troopers, hitting a patrol car. Through the investigation, police learned that it was the passenger who caused the collision in an attempt to get help, according to the probable cause statement. The trooper spoke with the driver, allegedly noting several signs of alcohol impairment. Officials reported a strong smell of alcohol, bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech. They said his clothes were also soaked, possibly with beer or urine. Lehi police responded to the scene and brought Bavaro to the police station, where he allegedly failed several sobriety tests. Police also spoke with the passenger, who said he didn't know Bavaro and had met him at the bar. He said Bavaro offered to drive him home, but did not follow his instructions and went on the freeway instead. The victim said Bavaro called him a "tough guy" and said he owed him money. He also said Bavaro spoke of the victim's girlfriend, but he doesn't have one. According to the victim, Bavaro would not calm down or let him out of the vehicle. "The victim stated he feared for his life as he did not know Joshua, or his intentions as he was not listening to him," police wrote. The victim said he saw the police lights and thought that if he could swerve the car toward the barrier, he could get their attention. "The victim stated he jerked the wheel towards the lights in an attempt to get the police to notice them as he felt it would be the only thing to prevent something happening to him at the hands of Joshua," the probable cause reads. One person was killed in a crash on State Route 201 near Magna on Sunday afternoon.Officials with the Utah Department of Transportation said the crash happenedA man in his 40s died after Sandy police fired multiple shots during a domestic-related incident, the Sandy Police Department said.According to the department,A burst of color, culture, and community connection is set to return to Utah County as one of the state’s most recognizable spring events approaches.ARC Salt LaA driver was arrested in Utah County after police said the passenger grabbed the steering wheel and jerked it toward troopers on the side of Interstate 15.JoshuA Navy Sailor from Utah helped save a man who experienced a medical emergency and lost control of his vehicle, which ended up in Florida'sBayou Chico Creek.Air
