A Manhattan townhouse linked to a publishing legend and a former New York City mayor has hit the market for $16.5 million.

The five-floor townhouse was once home to the late literary couple Bennett Cerf, the co-founder of Random House, and his wife, Phyllis Cerf Wagner, who co-founded Random House’s childrens’ imprint, Beginner Books, alongside Ted Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss. They lived there together until Bennett Cerf died in 1971, and Phyllis continued to call it home for several more decades, listing records show.

The home last traded for $14 million in 2010, and was soon given a major makeover, according to Chiang. That starts with a marble foyer on the main level, along with a gourmet kitchen with an island and a La Cornue range and a dining area that overlooks the garden. Upstairs, the second level features a lounge, a library and a living room that opens to the backyard.
