The Budget Inn on Government Street in downtown Mobile is approved for a major renovation, including new windows, doors, and a rooftop deck, which is expected to revitalize the area and increase hotel capacity.

A major renovation is planned for a downtown Mobile motel. The Architectural Review Board approved design plans for the Budget Inn on Government Street. The 1950s-era motel has seen better days. A driver behind the wheel of a U-Haul truck hit the covered motel entrance last year, significantly damaging the property.

Tarps cover a section on the north side that faces Government Street. The project includes new windows, doors and creating a rooftop deck. "I think it's, it's perfect, and it's exactly the kind of renovation, revitalization we want to see in downtown," said Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis. "I'd love to see that hotel packed out I'd love to see that hotel packed out during Mardi Gras with people celebrating on the balconies on the street side. They're right there on the parade route.""We've really never had the hotel capacity to really book out the convention center with large conventions. This hotel is a great step forward in that," said Cheriogotis. The owner is applying for a $7,500 grant with the Downtown Mobile Alliance to improve the facade. President and CEO Fred Rendfrey says they're reviewing the request now. "The building on Government Street is practically a new building. It's going to look fantastic, and I think it's going to be additive to the historic district and to commercial investment going on downtown," said Rendfrey. This project is just one piece of a much larger wave of development happening downtown. From the new arena and airport relocation to the block-by-block overhaul of St. Louis Street and proposed River Walk Plaza — there’s a lot happening."We've got all these big economic development civic projects sort of converging and coming to fruition," said Rendfrey. It was an online ad that offered an opportunity for sex at a price. And it came with one, a costly price for those who engaged the ad, made a deal and showed upAccording to the Mobile Co.
