Rightor Doyle, director of Down Low, discusses casting gay actors to play gay characters, LGBTQ+ representation, and infusing empathy into darkness.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Down Low is a wacky dark comedy that follows Gary, who recently came out of the closet and hired Cameron, a male sex worker, for a night. Things take a dark turn when the two men accidentally kill another man who Cameron invited to join the party. As the night progresses, they attempt to hide the body and keep themselves out of prison.
Yeah, you literally checked all those boxes off in this film, and it kept me captivated all the way through. It's just so fun watching Lucas and Zachary work on screen together. Lucas co-wrote this film, and he shines in Down Low as Cameron. Can you talk about collaborating with him on this film? Absolutely. Now, I love Zachary in this role; I think he is so good in this film. Can you discuss the casting process for Down Low and what qualities you were looking for to bring the character of Gary to life?
That's amazing. Now, much like Cameron bringing the best out of Gary, both actors, Lucas and Zachary, I feel like they bring the best out of each other in their scenes together. Their chemistry is unmatched; can you talk about how the two captured that chemistry and did that extend offscreen as well?
And I actually want to talk about spinning the movie out of control for a second because when Gary, Cameron, and Buck were on crack and there's that dance sequence, I feel like that's the most himself that Gary has been throughout the whole film. How important is it for you to balance that raunchy comedy with elements of the lighthearted and relatable moments in the film?
Rightor Doyle: I hope it does something. It's definitely the gay movie that I've always wanted to see. There is a coming-out story element to it, but I think the more, the merrier. And this is just me, Lucas, Zach, Phoebe, and all these people who worked in this movie; this is our version of what this thing is. It's a little darker; it's unapologetic; you may love it, you may hate it, but ultimately it's not apologizing for itself.
