Douglas County sheriff’s officials and commissioners violated Colorado labor laws during a union election process earlier this year, according to a state report.
DENVER, CO – MARCH 8 : Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly, left, testified against SB23-170, Extreme Risk Protection Order Petitions, at Old Supreme Court chamber of Colorado State Capitol building in Denver, Colorado on Wednesday, March 8, 2023. Douglas County officials violated state labor laws during an attempted union election process earlier this year, according to a report from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.
However, state labor officials said in their decision letter that the sheriff’s officials and county commissioners’ actions discouraged employees from unionizing and were “coercive and official in nature such that they were not expressions of personal opinion” and therefore not protected. In response, Weekly sent employees more than 10 emails where he opposed collective bargaining, highlighted his various successes fighting for pay and benefits for his employees and called out the Fraternal Order of Police for spreading false information about Weekly supporting unionization efforts.
According to the state report, county commissioners Teal, Laydon and Thomas used federal funds to publish a YouTube video that also spoke out against the collective bargaining effort. The Fraternal Order of Police withdrew its unionization petition shortly before the election, which was scheduled for April 29.
