Data Suggest Correlation Between Chronic Absenteeism and Poor Academic Performance.
Skylar Celeste Boone The administration with Dothan City Schools is working with the Houston County District Attorney’s Office to get ahead of a potential problem surrounding chronic absenteeism in the district.
“We want your children to be in school 100% of the time because we know in order for students to be academically successful they must be in school,” said Dr. Charles Corbitt, Director of DCS Student Services. “If your child has to be out of school please make sure it is an excused absence so you can avoid Truancy Court and potentially being charged with a Class A misdemeanor.”
In the case of unexcused absences for DCS students, parents are notified the third and fourth time a student is not in school without an excuse. The student is then referred to Houston County Truancy Prevention Project or directly to early warning court upon their fifth or sixth unexcused absence. A complaint and/or referral can then be filed with the Houston County Juvenile Court Services with subsequent unexcused absences.
Dr.Corbitt said the impacts of a student missing instructional time can have tremendous consequences. Data on chronic absenteeism directly correlates to a student’s ability to understand and retain information.
