Multiple school districts in the Dothan area, including Dothan City Schools, have opted to remain closed on Friday, January 24th, due to persistent winter weather conditions and concerns about black ice.
Dothan City Schools, initially planning to reopen on Friday, announced the closure of its schools for the remainder of the week due to ongoing snowfall. Local officials cautioned about hazardous road conditions, particularly the presence of black ice, which posed a significant risk to motorists. Dothan City Schools' administration actively collaborated with Dothan Houston County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and City of Dothan leadership throughout the winter storm.
While some melting has occurred, the threat of black ice persisted, creating dangerous travel conditions across Dothan and Houston County. Superintendent Dennis Coe prioritized the safety of students, families, and staff, remaining in close contact with superintendents from neighboring districts to coordinate a unified response. As a precautionary measure, several school districts, including Dothan City, Houston County, Henry County, Geneva County, Geneva City, and Wallace Community College, made the decision to remain closed on Friday, January 24th. This closure aimed to ensure that all winter weather concerns had subsided before resuming normal school operations. Districts anticipate a return to their regular schedules on Monday, January 27th. Dothan High School, which had previously scheduled a Virtual Day for Monday, January 27th, will proceed with the virtual learning plan. Dothan City Schools urged parents to stay informed through school district communication channels for any further updates.
