The school system, which is set to lose federal funds at the end of May, sat down with city commissioners on what they can do to help.DOTHAN, Ala. - Administrators with Dothan City Schools sat down on Tuesday with city commissioners, looking for ways they can help as the school system is in need of more funding.

They are asking city leaders for $5 million, which will go to fund various programs that could be cut if they do not receive any money. Superintendent Dr. Dennis Coe said programs like Bright Key, City Block Program and art and music education at elementary schools, all of which have went on to help improve students’ behavior and grades, are at risk.

”When you look at the results that we showed over the last couple of years, we are at 10 out of 15 schools that have received a report card that improved a complete letter grade. We have two schools within Dothan City Schools that have been recognized by the state board as being in the top twenty-five schools in the state for improvement,” Dr. Coe said.
