‘Don’t Do It By Yourself’: Leaders Share Thoughts On Pride, Representation And Black Queer Agency
“Instead of me feeling like I’m not being represented, I’ll just represent myself,” photographer and songwriter Teron Beal said. “I need to find truth in my work, because sometimes when a lot of people come around you can pander to the audience. When you have a lot of people coming from a lot of different directions, you have to think about who you really are.
“It’s also important that we do it,” artist and Black queer tarot creator Kendrick Daye said. “When we do get those crumbs of representation, it’s not always handled with care. When we make our stories, we can navigate representation and make the work more authentic. What we see all the time is not reflective of all of us.
“However I get to show up is a gift to spaces I enter,” UNOIA’s chief creation officer Danielle Gray said. “Figure out what it means to show out in different roles. The pandemic has shifted the way a lot of people work. Now we just have to face ourselves, sit in our homes, and figure out if these are the lives we want to be living.” Thursday's Curating Culture & Community converation MOBI's PR Consultant, Kenneth Courtney.
“We lost a generation of people,” MOBI PR Consultant Kenneth Courtney said. “We want to keep connections with leaders from the past, and ensure that people in the present have a younger generation that you don’t have a connection with.”Friday's programming, The Black Queer Experience, with featured artist, educator, and pro-activistTolerating the crumbs make it seem like we’re fine where we are,” MOBI’s director of community engagement Dwayne Williams said.
“Can’t wait to get to a time where’s it’s normalized to see Black queer people living our authentic lives,” For The Culture contributor Kenny Williams said. “It’d be nice for it to be depicted. It’s important we pull up the next generation of Black queer folk who will take the world by storm how we’re doing now. A lot of what we can do now is because of those before us who went through hell and back.
